OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP ORPHANAGE AND SCHOOL
(as of January 21, 2010)
The Our Lady of Perpetual Help Orphanage and School run by Sr. Luvia Joseph was completely demolished in the earthquake. The bodies of 150 children were found; many more children have not been accounted for. Sr. Luvia could hear children still trapped under the rubble, but could not get to them. She took all the surviving children she could find to her convent, but the place is too small and there is not enough food.
Sr. Luvia’s biological sister, who belongs to the same congregation (MCMA- Missionaries of Christ Maria Alphonse), also died in the earthquake. Ninety percent of the area where she was staying was completely devastated. Sr. Luvia was able to contact a relative in the US and relate the news, but no other contact has been made since. Claudette Presa, a close friend of Sr. Luvia and our US contact living in Florida, said that she has had no luck yet trying to get a hold of Sr. Luvia.
